Published by the National Association of State EMS Directors Proposed FDA medical glove regulations
Make Your Views Known. There’s still time to send your comments to the FDA on the proposed medical glove regulation and draft medical glove guidance manual. The agency has extended its deadline for comments on both of these items to January 27, 2000. The proposed regulation and draft manual represent significant changes in the requirements for all medical gloves. You can read about these issues on the FDA web site at:
Basically, the proposed rule classifies medical gloves as Class II medical devices subject to special controls, including expiration dating and labeling requirements. Gloves will be classified into four categories: powdered surgeon’s, powder-free surgeon’s, powdered examination and powder-free examination. In addition to the requirement that gloves bear an expiration date, gloves that contain natural rubber latex and/or powder will be required to bear new caution statements. If you would like more information on the proposed rule, e-mail Andrew Lowery at axl@cdrh.fda.gov or Arthur Yellin at aky@cdrh.fda.gov, in the FDA’s Division of Small Manufacturers Assistance, or call 800-638-2041, Ext. 116 or 146.
