OSHA sets new bloodborne pathogen inspection guidelines

By IRA B. DYER, II
Major, Louisville Division of Fire

LOUISVILLE — OSHA has established new inspection guidelines regarding bloodborne pathogens. EMS agencies had better read, study and act or they may find themselves out of compliance.

The complete OSHA document can be found at: http://www.osha.gov/

The new inspection and compliance guidelines do not reflect any changes in CFR 1910.1030. Therefore, no regulatory action is required. But they do change how employers are inspected and increases the likelihood of citations being issued.

One of the most important items concerns the use of needleless systems and self-sheathing IVs and needles. It appears EMS agencies will have to switch to these types of products in order to be in compliance.

However, the availability of these items will probably diminish for a period of time due to a significant increase in demand. Also, gaining acceptance of these new devices by members of EMS services will be difficult.

It's possible that numerous agencies will encounter difficulties preparing for these required changes.
