Helicopter GPS approaches to be developed for 3 Kentucky hospitals

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HELICOPTERS PRESS RELEASE
Submitted By GARY STROMBERG
Program Director, CareFlight Air Medical Services

LEXINGTON — Satellite Technology Implementation (STI), LLC., of Orange Beach, Alabama, has been contracted by Rocky Mountain Helicopters, Provo, Utah, October 28, 1999, to develop a GPS IFR network of initially three approaches for St. Joseph Hospital CareFlight Air Medical Services to serve hospitals throughout the Central and Southeastern Kentucky Area.

"The largest air medical transport service helicopter operator in the United States has taken steps necessary to increase operations using GPS technology, " said Stephen M. Hickok, STI Managing Owner. "We're very excited about working with Rocky for the first time. Their efforts will enhance safety and increase operational capabilities with flights under IFR during periods of low ceiling or visibility conditions."

According to Karl Poulsen, VP of Aviation Services for RMH, "We are pleased to formalize this relationship with STI, the premier developer of satellite based instrument procedures. This capability is yet another value added service provided by RMH and CareFlight for its customers."

STI provides services under special authorization by the Federal Aviation Administration to complete on-site visits and data collection, accomplish airspace, environmental and FAA coordination, and develop final approach packages, in support of meeting the growing IFR needs of the helicopter industry. STI will develop an approach procedure to each of the Rocky Mountain Helicopters' sites, using their suite of approach procedure software programs and submitted approach procedures to FAA for administrative review, processing, and flight inspection.
