Paramedic recert exams scheduled

FRANKFORT — Paramedic recertification exams for those paramedics with certifications expiring December 31, 1999 have been scheduled at:

  • 9:00 AM EST- 4:00 PM- Monday , October 25, 1999, Jefferson ounty EMS
  • 9:00 AM EST- 4:00 PM-Wednesday, October 27, 1999, Paintsville Community Center
  • 9:00 AM EST- 4:00 PM- Friday, October 29, 1999, Somerset/Pulaski County EMS
  • 9:00 AM EST- 4:00 PM- Thursday, November 4, 1999, Frankfort Health Services Board Room
  • 9:00 AM CST- 1:00 PM- Monday, November 8, 1999, Medical Center at Bowling Green
  • 9:00 AM CST- 4:00 PM- Wednesday , November 10, 1999, Caldwell County EMS

lease call the office and register your choice of testing site.  Exams will be given etween the hours stated for each site on a continuous basis, but we need to know approximately how many to expect for each site so we can be prepared. Your paperwork needs to be in the office by the date of your recertification examination Please try to talk to Regina when you call in to (502) 564-8963.

These are the only sites being offered due to upcoming holidays and other commitments. We do not have the staff to continue to try to administer "one person exams" at the Branch office, therefore you will need to make arrangements to attend one of these sites.

The regulation pertaining to the renewal of certification, 201 KAR 9:121:

Active status. Certified paramedics on active status shall be required to meet the following criteria for renewal of certification:
(a) File a completed application as furnished by the board along with the appropriate fee.($35.00 fee)
(b) Maintain current certification as an emergency medical technical by the Cabinet for Human Resources in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
(c) Maintain current ACLS certification by the American Heart Association. (supply copy)
(d) Submit a recommendation from the medical director and annual evaluations. (2-separate annual evaluations-1 for each year of cert. period)
(e) Submit verification from the medical director of sixty (60) hours of approved in-service training within the last two-(2) years.
(f) Pass the written paramedic recertification exam with a minimum score of eighty (80) prior to the expiration of his certification. If a passing score is not obtained on the first attempt, the certified paramedic, shall have their expiration date extended by a period not greater than ninety (90) days. The paramedic's medical director shall meet with the certified paramedic and review with him/her the results of the first test. The certified paramedic shall be required to obtain in-service education in areas of documented weakness. Hours of in-service education required in each subject area shall be determined by the medical director. After the certified paramedic has met the in-service education requirements outlined by the medical director, he shall be allowed to test a second time. If on the second test a minimum score of eighty (80) is not obtained by the certified paramedic, he shall be considered as not having met the criteria for recertification and as such shall not be recertified as a paramedic.
(g) Failure to comply with the above recertification requirements shall result in the loss of paramedic certification

You will also need to supply us with a copy of HIV/AIDS course attended during certification period.

Inactive status. Certified paramedics on inactive status shall be required to meet the following criteria for renewal of certification:
(a) File a completed application as furnished by the board along with the appropriate fee. ($35.00 fee)
(b) Maintain current certification as an emergency medical technician by the Cabinet for Human Resources in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
(c) Submit verification of sixty (60) hours of approved in-service training within the last two-(2) years. (on Inactive Reporting form)
(d) Failure to comply with the above  recertification requirements shall result in the loss of paramedic certification.

You will also need to supply us with a copy of HIV/AIDS course attended during certification period.

If you have moved or changed employment:

Section 6. Renewal of Certification. Renewal of paramedic certification occurs on a biennial basis according to the criteria outlined in subsections (1) and (2) of this section. It is the responsibility of paramedic to keep the board informed of any change in address or change in employment within thirty (30) days of such change.
