Eastern Kentucky Fire & EMS Olympics a success

By STEVE BECRAFT
Chairman, Eastern Kentucky Fire and EMS Olympics

Thanks ! How many times can you say thank you? I really don't know but here it is again.

Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Kentucky Fire and EMS Olympics Committee I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You. The committee has put in many long hours and dedication to once again have one of the finest events this state has ever seen as far as Fire and EMS Competition goes, but without the help of several agencies we would not be able to have such event.

It takes many hours and hard work to pull off such event and they have once again showed me they could do it. I would like to thank all the sponsors of this year's event, who are PARR, E-ONE, Southeastern Equipment, Paratech (Mike Brady), U.K. Air Medical, Care Flight (St. Joseph Hospital), Chef America, Hoffman, Copper Tire, David Caywood, S&S Equipment, Garrett Communication, Montgomery Tractor Sales, Vehicle Systems, Software Development, Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals, Montgomery County Fair Board, Montgomery County Fire Department, Montgomery County Ambulance Service, Physio Control, and Kentucky Tech. Region 9. If I have left someone out THANK YOU.

I would also like to thank the people of Care First and Bath County Rescue Squad for their help during the competition.

Also a thank you goes out to all the judges who gave their time to help with this event. Without them no one would be able to win (Ha Ha.) Here are some of the people who helped with this event:

  • Paris Fire Department
  • Bourbon County Fire Department
  • Salt Lick Vol. Fire Department
  • Montgomery County Fire Department
  • Montgomery County Ambulance Service
  • Bath County Rescue Squad
  • Bath County Ambulance Service

A special Thanks goes to all of the competitors for without them there would be no need in having this event. This is what the whole weekend is all about, for them.

I would like to take this chance to thank my committee. If it weren't for them and their support I would not have attempted to try such event. They have been the rock for the past two years for this event, and have been there to bail me out when I thought all was lost and at my ends.

This years competition was dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives this past year so that other might sleep at night. On the weekend of the competition the night before, a friend of mine and myself had a long talk about the Fire Service and EMS. Which way are we going was the question we asked ourselves many times during that conversation and is it all worth it? And we came to the conclusion, yes, because if you have ever heard the scream of a child silenced by its parents, or the face of mother when she hands you her child and says help me, or the time a child asks is daddy ok, and you begin to reflect, can I, do I , will I , be the one to make a difference when I pull the drunk from the gutter, or help a child who just fell down, or stop the hurt from happening. We might and we might not, but always be the one who said "I gave it my all." Never forget the ones who gave it their all.

ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU
