County takes over ambulance service SMITHLAND Because no bids to operate the local ambulance were submitted, Livingston County fiscal court must now find the finances needed to manage the county's ambulance service. The current manager, Philip Ramage, does not want to continue managing the service, citing collection problems. "I don't feel like we can do without the service," Magistrate Roy Ringstaff told the Crittenden Press. "It may be a little expensive, but maybe we should go ahead." It is estimated that employee compensation alone will require $144,000 per year. Upkeep and supplies would cost more.. "The county will maintain the ambulance as an ALS (Advanced Life Saving) service," stated Judge-Executive Joe Ward. "We will continue to operate it as it currently is and Phillip (Ramage) has agreed to help as much as possible." Crittenden Health Systems and Livingston Hospital had expressed an interest in running the service, but neither submitted a bid to the county last week. "People use the ambulance, but they don't want to pay for it," said Ringstaff. "We may need to consider a collection service to collect money for the ambulance," O'Bryan added.
