JACKSON — A University of Kentucky Air Medical Services helicopter crashed into a hillside in Breathitt County late Monday night, shortly after taking off from the Julian Carroll Airport to return to Lexington at the end of their shift.

All four crew members were killed. There were no patients on board.

The cause of the crash could not be immediately determined.

The Sikorsky S-76A helicopter was leased from Petroleum Helicopters Inc. of Lafayette, La. The company identified the two pilots as Don Green of the Lexington area and Ernie Jones of Cleveland.

Also killed were Flight Nurse Sheila Zellers, 43, of Elizabethtown, and Flight Paramedic Brian Harden, 31, of Richmond.

The crash occurred around 10:08 p.m.

UK's other helicopter was grounded Tuesday to allow crew members a chance to regroup. It is tentively scheduled to return to service Wednesday.

This was the first crash for UK's flight program, which has operated since August 1987.
