Paramedics not required to receive domestic violence training

By ROBERT CALHOUN
Kentucky EMS Branch Manager

FRANKFORT — There has been a blizzard of questions raised within the past week about the possibility that all paramedics certified in Kentucky would be required to receive 3 hours of "approved" training in domestic violence by June of this year.

I consulted with the Governor's Office of Domestic Violence and found there is NO such requirement in place. According to Jim Grace in the Governor's Office of Domestic Violence, the legislation (HB 309 passed by the 1996 Kentucky General Assembly) is applicable to RNs, primary care physicians, and certain mental health professionals.

While such training may be valuable and useful to paramedics and other health professions, and may be eligible for meeting continuing education requirements, it is not required.
