Staff changes continue at EMS Branch

By BOB CALHOUN
Kentucky State EMS Manager

FRANKFORT — As many of you have heard, we continue to experience staff changes here in the EMS Branch Central Office.

In the last month, both Shirley Luther and Wayne King have retired. Glenn Lewis has taken another position within DPH. Now Robbie O'Brien will be leaving at the end of the month for a position with the Natural Resources Cabinet.

We are actively recruiting to replace these individuals. We have had two additions:

  • Jackie Walters started with is March 16th as Supervisor of the Provider Licensing & Field Services Section. Ms. Walters transferred to EMS from the Department of Education, Division of School and Community Nutrition, where she reviewed organizations participating in the federally funded Child Nutrition Programs for compliance with federal regulations. Prior to that, she was the Director of Unit Administration at Eastern State Hospital, where her department included medical supply, furniture and equipment inventory, the secretarial pool and a host of liaison functions between administrative and clinical departments. Jackie also served as Director of Dietetic Services at ESH for a number of years. She has a B.S. in Dietetics and a Masters in Business Administration. Her education and job experience are diverse, and she is looking forward to learning all she can about Emergency Medical Systems, as she assumes her new duties as Section Supervisor.
  • David Marlette joined our staff last week. David was already part of our current Division of Adult and Child Health, most recently working with the Child Health Promotion Team in the area of childhood injury prevention. Before that he worked for many years with the Dental Health Branch. Best of all, David has an EMS background. He has been an EMT for six years and is a member of the Pleasureville Fire and EMS District 4 of Henry County.

We've also had some changes among our Regional EMS Advisor/Inspectors:

  • Sam Lowe joined our staff in February as a Regional EMS Advisor/Inspector for Northeast Kentucky. Sam worked for many years with the Carter County Ambulance Services coming up through the ranks and ultimately serving as director of the service. Sam left Carter County Ambulance Service in 1997 and worked for a time as a police officer and substitute teacher until accepting his new position as Northeast KY Regional EMS Advisor. Mr. Lowe will be based in Morehead. His phone number at the office is 606/780-0957, FAX 606/780-9458.
  • Rick Strunk is still on extended medical leave due to his injuries in a vehicle crash back on Labor Day weekend, Rick will not be able to work as a field inspector. We are still hopeful that Rick will eventually be able to come back to work for us in an office role when he recovers from his injuries and is released for work.
  • David Williams, formerly our Regional EMS Advisor/Inspector for Southeast KY has been moved to Somerset where he will primarily cover Rick Strunk's former South Central Kentucky area. David's coverage area will range from Logan County to McCreary County. He will still be helping us to cover the Southeast Kentucky area along with our other field staff until we can get approval to place a new individual in Southeast Kentucky. David's new office phone number at Somerset is 606/679-4416.

Finally, we are please to announce that Janet Skelton has returned to work after an extended absence. We are grateful for Janet's return.
