Governor announces Medicaid increase for EMS

By JOHN HULTGREN
Kentucky Ambulance Providers Association

OWENSBOROHealth and Family Services Secretary Mark Birdwhistell announced at the Kentucky EMS Conference and Expo in Owensboro yesterday that Gov. Fletcher intends to sign an executive order that would place an additional $750,000 into Medicaid. After federal matching, this could increase EMS reimbursements approximately $2.5 million.

The increase will be effective on October 1.

"This is a direct result of the Kentucky Ambulance Provider Association's meeting with Governor Fletcher and Secretary Birdwhistell last February," said KAPA president Mark Harrison. "KAPA appreciates the Governor's attention to some of the unanticipated operational increases, such as the cost of fuel increasing 103% over the past three years, that EMS has had to face."
