LOUISVILLE — Kyle Thompson, the attorney for the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services, has submitted his resignation to the board.

In a letter dated today sent to board chairman Judge/Executive Rob Rothenburger, Thompson wrote "It is with great sadness that I am submitting my resignation as legal counsel for the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services effective May 31, 2007.  It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to serve the EMS community throughout the Commonwealth as the first in-house legal representative of the board. Throughout the last three years I have met, and worked with, some of the greatest professionals in the entire world. I am so very proud of the hard work and diligence of this agency that has led to the immeasurable progress of EMS in Kentucky and the United States. I am thankful for the opportunities that KBEMS has provided to me and my family and I will truly miss all of my co-workers and the KBEMS Board members that made my job so enjoyable."

Thompson was reportedly suspended with pay by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System on April 27, at the same time that KBEMS executive director Brian Bishop was also reportedly suspended with pay. The reported suspensions have never been confirmed by KBEMS or KCTCS, despite repeated requests by the Kentucky EMS Connection.

On May 17 the KBEMS board voted to authorize Rothenburger to negotiate a settlement with Thompson. The board took no reported action on Bishop, who had already resigned, giving two months notice, prior to the reported suspension.

Thompson told the Kentucky EMS Connection on May 18 that he was unable to discuss the terms of the settlement.
