CJ Systems Aviation purchases MedFlight of East Kentucky

CJ Systems Aviation Group Press Release

PITTSBURGH, PennsylvaniaCJ Systems Aviation Group, a leading provider of air medical services, has acquired the critical care ground ambulance component of Pikeville, Ky.-based MedFlight of East Kentucky.

According to Scott Sampey, senior director of CJ Systems’ Critical Care Transport Group, most of the existing staff were retained with the transaction.

“The overlying priority in every aspect of this acquisition is to maintain and enhance the quality medical transport service that the people of eastern Kentucky have come to expect from CJ Systems,” Sampey explained.  “Retaining the proven professionals at MedFlight fits that strategy, ensuring that there will not be any gaps in service.”

CJ Systems already provides all pilots and maintenance staff for the air ambulance component.  With the acquisition, CJ Systems now provides the medical crews (including nurses, paramedics, and EMTs), and billing operations – while owning and operating the one helicopter and the extensive fleet of ambulances already in service at MedFlight.

The consolidation of the critical care ground operation in Pikeville, along with the recent acquisition of STATCARE in Louisville and opening of the air medical program at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, will create a commonwealth-wide system of critical care transport.

MedFlight began at the Pikeville location in 1996 with ground transportation only, adding its helicopter in 2003 to extend its geographic reach and speed of service delivery.  CJ Systems plans to use the MedFlight acquisition as a prototype for similar expansion of its ground medical transportation capabilities, said Sampey.
