Kentucky EMS Memorial Bike Ride

Submitted By ROBERT GALVIN III

LOUISVILLE — In May, 2007, EMS professionals from Kentucky and surrounding states will embark on an adventure of a life time, bicycling 400 miles over the Appalachian Mountains to attend the annual National EMS Memorial being held in Roanoke, Virginia.

Needed are riders, support personnel, and donations from EMS professionals across Kentucky and surrounding States. This ride will elevate the public's awareness of EMS professionals and show respect and rememberence for both Kentucky and national honorees that have been recognized in the National EMS Memorial.

The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride was created by Boston EMS EMT Jamie Orsino in 2001. Its purpose is to raise awareness for the National EMS Memorial and the National EMS Memorial Service which is held each May in Roanoke, Virginia, to honor those members of the EMS community who lost their lives in the line of duty.

While the first ride began in Boston, MA, today riders gather in New York City to begin the 600 mile trek to Roanoke. Though they gather from all corners of the nation, the riders share the common bond of seeking to honor our EMS heroes. Through fields and over mountains, the memories of lost loved ones keep the riders moving forward.

This Year will be the first year of the Kentucky EMS Memorial Ride, an extension of the Original EMS Memorial Bike Ride from New York City to Roanoke. Our ride will begin in Somerset, Kentucky, and riders from EMS departments throughout Kentucky and surrounding states will trek over 400 miles joining the ride from New York City with everyone riding into Roanoke together for the National EMS Memorial Service. This will be a great way to elevate the public's awareness of the National EMS Memorial Service and the sacrifices of EMS professionals throughout the nation.
