Children's Hospital has new procedure for accepting EMS charts

By VICKI BARNES, RN, MSN
Kosair Children's Hospital

LOUISVILLE — Kosair Children's Hospital needs your help making sure the EMS patient chart becomes part of the hospital's medical record.

Kosair Children's Hospital is required to have the EMS run sheet included with the patient chart. But more importantly, the pre-hospital information that EMS provides is very useful for patient management and should be available to the medical staff for reference.

Quite often the EMS run sheet never becomes connected to the hospital's patient record. In an effort to assure the valuable information you provide gets on the Emergency Department chart, we have now developed the following procedure:

Have the "facility representative assuming care" sign your EMS chart. Immediately give the hospital copy of your chart to that individual. Alternatively, finish charting and then give the copy to that individual.

If you have any questions, please contact Vicki Barnes, RN, MSN, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Trauma, Kosair Children's Hospital, at (502) 629-7223.
