State Trauma System Conference planned

By MARY E. FALLAT, MD
Member, Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services

FRANKFORTThe Commonwealth of Kentucky, through the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS), has received a third federal grant that provides seed money to aid in development of a trauma system in our state. An annual stakeholders conference must be held as a condition of the grant.

This year, the conference will be held on March 8 at the Holiday Inn in Frankfort, Kentucky. On the evening of March 7, there will be a welcome reception for legislators and attendees from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The conference will be held on March 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be refreshments and a cash bar at the evening reception, and a continental breakfast and lunch will be served during the conference. A preliminary agenda is printed below, although this is subject to change as the conference date approaches.

A core group of trauma stakeholders has been working on draft legislation which will be discussed at the conference. Two articles were published in the December issue of the Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association that provide results of two important surveys that were done in the Commonwealth. One looked at resources in our emergency departments and was done by the Kentucky Hospital Association, and the second was a public opinion survey of 800 persons that illustrates public support for development of a trauma system which was done by the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center.
