Former Louisville EMT died in hospital attack

LOUISVILLE — Jeffrey L. Wiener, 32, the former Jefferson County emergency medical technician who died in Iraq last week, was killed after insurgents attacked a civilian hospital, a military statement said.

Wiener, a Navy petty officer 3rd class assigned to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, was shot by insurgents Saturday after a suicide bombing near a hospital in western Iraq. Three Marines were killed in the initial explosion, and Wiener died in the ensuing four-hour firefight.

Wiener worked for Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services about two years before joining the Navy in 2002. Most of his relatives live near Long Island, N.Y.

Weiner's visitation will be at the O. B. Davis Funeral Home, 101 Route 25A, in Miller Place, NY. (Phone: 613-348-1400) Visitation will be from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm on May 14 and May 15. The funeral will be held at the funeral home on May 16 at 10:30 am. He will be buried at Calberton National Cemetery.
