CMS will help EMS recover some costs of transporting the uninsured
By JOHN HULTGREN LOUISVILLE — The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced yesterday that it will provide $1 billion over four years to hospitals, certain physicians, and ambulance providers to help recover the costs for providing emergency medical care to qualified individuals who cannot afford emergency care. Each state will receive funding based on a formula and payments will be available to eligible providers for some or all of their unreimbursed costs for providing emergency health care required under section 1867 of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). A notice will be published in the Federal Register on May 13.
