UofL Hospital gets national Stroke Center designation

LOUISVILLE — University of Louisville Hospital's Stroke Center has been named a "primary stroke center" by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

The distinction recognizes centers "that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care." It is the first hospital in Kentucky to receive it, and one of about 50 in the nation.

The stroke center's team, led by Dr. Kerri Remmel, includes neurologists, interventional radiologists, cardiologists and nurses, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapists. The center provides a system designed to diagnose a stroke and treat it quickly. It also has a program to educate the public as well as health-care providers in Kentucky about stroke.
