LifeNet places IFR helicopter in eastern Ky.

LifeNet Press Release

LEXINGTON LifeNet is pleased to announce the placement of their first twin engine IFR helicopter in Kentucky. This aircraft will be servicing the Jackson, Hazard, and Whitesburg area. IFR stands for “Instrument Flight Rules” which means that this aircraft can safely respond in weather conditions that would ground other aircraft.  This aircraft also is a much larger, twin engine aircraft.

“We are constantly looking at ways to improve our service in Eastern and Central Kentucky”, states Tim Smith LifeNet Program Director.  “We have relocated our aircraft and placed them in more strategic areas that enable them to respond in a quicker and  more reliable manner”, added Smith.  The Eastern Kentucky area has some problematic weather patterns that sometimes affect our ability to respond.  “We feel that the placement of this new aircraft will allow us to improve access to health care for the region” states Smith.

The aircraft is a Bell 222 twin engine IFR aircraft with autopilot.  This helicopter has the ability to carry two patients and three medical personnel if necessary.  “The addition of this aircraft will allow us to fly safely and to a wider variety of flight requests when the other aircraft are unable to fly”, stated Smith. In inclement weather, patients can be transported to the airport by a ground ambulance and with the IFR capabilities be safely airlifted to tertiary care.

LifeNet has been committed to this region since 1990 and dedicating this multi million dollar aircraft in the region demonstrates their continued long term commitment to the region. LifeNet has strong relationships with the various hospitals and EMS agencies in this area.  “We are excited bringing this addition to the LifeNet fleet and look forward to enhancing the health of the community for many years to come” Tim Smith adds.
