Fire Safety Day in Pike County By
PHILLIP ELLIOTT PIKE
COUNTY —
On
Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, fire and EMS personnel
discussed fire safety and demonstrated EMS skills for the
students at Robinson Creek Elementary in Pike County.
According to Cyrus Hess, Paramedic
Supervisor with DHP Ambulance Service, this was one of several
joint efforts between fire and EMS departments in Pike County
to provide educational information to the public in a fun
format. Students
received fire hats and various fire safety decals from Shelby Valley Fire
Department, and DHP presented them with crayons and activity and coloring
books titled “Learn About the Ambulance”
featuring Timmy the EMS Dinosaur.
One of the students was immobilized as part of the demonstration. The students were given a tour of a rescue truck, a mini-pumper, and one of the engines. DHP supplied an advanced life support unit for the tour as well. Fire and EMS personnel identified various pieces of equipment and explained their uses. After the tours, the students were given demonstrations of fire safety skills, splinting, patient assessment, and patient immobilization.
