EMT injured in fatal wreck By
JOHN HULTGREN CADIZ — A two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 68 in Trigg County yesterday claimed the life of a Christian County schoolteacher and seriously injured a full-time EMT trying to complete his paramedic internship, who apparently fell asleep while driving. James Albert Burks IV, 20, of Hopkinsville, was transported to the Trigg County Hospital and was later transferred to Jennie Stuart Medical Center and then Baptist Hospital in Nashville for extensive surgery to his legs. Burks is a paramedic graduate with Marshall County EMS and a part-time EMT with Trigg County EMS and Yellow Ambulance of Hopkinsville. Burks' Ford Explorer collided head-on with a minivan driven by Sandra McGinnis, 44, a teacher at Indian Hills Elementary School and the wife of Trigg County school superintendent Tim McGinnis. The wreck occurred at about 6:20 a.m. one mile west of Arrowhead Golf Course, in the area between Tanyard Road and Kentucky 139. State Trooper Barry Meadows said Burks apparently fell asleep while driving. His vehicle crossed the centerline and hit McGinnis' van. Meadows said that a preliminary investigation indicated that speeding was not a factor in the wreck. John Mark Vincent, Trigg County deputy coroner, said he pronounced McGinnis dead at the wreck scene.
