Two killed when ambulance strikes ATV

Correction: Because of an error by Associated Press, this article incorrectly stated that the ambulance struck the ATV. According to Jake England, EMS Director for Monroe County EMS, the ATV struck the ambulance on the right side, causing the ambulance to flip 2-1/2 times. Also, there were only two staff members in the ambulance, and not three as reported by AP. (8.28.02)

Update: According to a spokesperson for the Hammer family, the family disputes the correction issued by Monroe County EMS on Aug. 28 as inaccurate. The Hammer family maintains that, according to the accident report, the ambulance struck the ATV as it was pulling out of a driveway, throwing it and the girls into the air. The ambulance then swerved, causing the ambulance to flip. (12.27.02)

TOMPKINSVILLE — A traffic crash involving an all-terrain vehicle and an ambulance has left two Monroe County youths dead and another severely injured, Kentucky State Police said.

Jerica Hammer, 16, and Skyler Gearlds, 8, were killed late Sunday afternoon and Jalyn Hammer, 10, was severely injured when a Monroe County ambulance struck the ATV they were riding 11 miles east of Tompkinsville.

Jerica Hammer drove the ATV out of a private driveway onto Kentucky 100 and the vehicle was struck by the ambulance driven by Mark Davis, 44, of Cave City, officers said.

Jalyn Hammer was flown to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville where she was listed in critical, but stable condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Davis and two passengers in the ambulance were treated at Monroe County Hospital for minor injuries and released. Jerica Hammer was not wearing a helmet, police said.
