Barren-Metcalfe retires first employee under hazardous duty By
MICHAEL SWIFT GLASGOW — Barren-Metcalfe County EMS Director Mike Swift is honored to announce that Steely Siler Green, Jr. is retiring from the local ambulance service after some 25 years of service. Besides achieving a sterling personal accomplishment, Green’s retirement marks a historical first for the Barren-Metcalfe County EMS, as he is the first employee to retire from the ambulance service under the hazardous duty retirement system. In the past, other employees have retired from other jobs and/or branches of public safety and then left the ambulance service, but Green is the first to actually retire from the ambulance service. Green’s career with the ambulance service began in June of 1977 as an ambulance/fire dispatcher under Barren County’s CETA program. While working as a dispatcher Green attended classes and earned his certification as an EMT. In 1978 he was hired on a full-time basis by the ambulance service as an EMT. During his span of employment, Green worked at both the Edmonton and Glasgow stations where he witnessed many changes over the years. Some of the most significant changes included the construction and move from the Fire Department Substation on Cross Street to the EMS Headquarters building on East Main, the construction and move to the Edmonton station in Metcalfe county and the ambulance service’s transition from a Basic Life Support ambulance service with all EMTs to an Advanced Life Support Service with an EMT and a Paramedic on each ambulance. In 1984, Green was promoted to the position of Shift Commander at the Glasgow station, a position that he has held until his retirement. EMS Director Mike Swift joins with all of the other employees at the ambulance service in congratulating Steely on his years of dedicated service to the citizens of both Barren and Metcalfe counties. They wish Steely and his wife Jan the very best for a very happy and well deserved retirement.
