EMS crew overcome by wild turkey

By CHRIS GILLEY
DHP Ambulance Service

ERMINE — A DHP ambulance was involved in a very unusual accident yesterday on U.S. 119 between Town Mountain Road and the Wal-Mart intersection in Pike County.

The driver of the ambulance, EMT Roger Keene of Shelbiana, noticed a wild turkey flying from a patch of trees on the right side of the road. While pointing the turkey out to EMT Chris Gilley, the flying turkey struck the windshield of the ambulance.

The windshield shattered and the turkey entered the vehicle. Keene was able to control the vehicle and bring it to a stop.

Keene and Gilley were transported by an ALS DHP unit to Pikeville Methodist Hospital where they were treated and released. Both crew members were left with a few scratches.

The turkey, which was pronounced dead at the scene, was bagged and given to Keene at his request.
