TRINA GOETHALS NEW CASTLE Emergency Medical Services again took the majority of the discussion during the Fiscal Court meeting Aug. 15. After magistrates discussed funding of the transport service, its future was in jeopardy. Budgets showed the transport service is not bringing in a significant amount of money as previously thought. Magistrates said they were told the service would pay for itself, but they were discouraged to see that it had not broke even. "If we were just to break even I would be tickled to death," said Henry County Judge/Executive Tommy Bryant. "But, it is no one's fault. It is a statewide problem that you can not collect on this service." Magistrate Wayne Gunnell was in support of keeping the service, because he said the county would lose more without it. "There are so many days that ambulance is used for emergencies," Gunnell said. "If we go to just one ambulance for the whole county again then we are going to be right back where we were three years ago." Bryant said other counties were able to get by, and he thought Henry County might be able to contract with neighboring counties such as Oldham or Shelby. At the end of the lengthy discussion, Bryant suggested discontinuing the transport service because it was not paying for itself. Other magistrates agreed that a trail period be made where the EMS would go without the transport service for a short period of time to see what other arrangements could be worked out, and to see if the county could do without the service. No motions were passed, the topic was said to need further discussion from the court and the EMS board. Other EMS business included the location of the new building. Gunnell suggested to the court a site in Eminence, as their city council has requested. No objections were made, but Bryant said more discussion was needed with New Castle's city council. Magistrates agreed they wanted the land with "no strings attached."
