'Operation Gunslinger': unique disaster drill in Frankfort

WHAS-TV

FRANKFORT — Frankfort, Kentucky is the scene for a first of it's kind disaster drill this week.

Civilian Emergency Management, the National Guard, and the U-S Marines are practicing for a disaster we all pray never happens.

Troops are gearing up for an attack that should only happen in the movies.

They are practicing for the absolute worst possible situation. A scenario where an earthquake occurs on the Madrid fault, followed by a terrorist attack with chemical weapons.

It's not a possibility the military rules out any more. All the communication is being conducted via satellite. This is the first exercise of it's kind anywhere. The state and local emergency agencies combined with National Guard and backed by the Marines.

The idea is to handle a situation so severe that local agencies can't handle it.

It seems like something out of a movie but those involved in the drill know it could one day be real.

The exercise is called Operation Gunslinger and runs through Friday.
