Million Mom (and others) March

By KATHLEEN A REAM
Director, Government Affairs, Emergency Nurses Association

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Last week, ENA President Benny Marett and Executive Director Pat Blake met with Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) to discuss what ENA could do to help stop the wave of gun violence that continues to sweep the Nation.

Representative McCarthy, a nurse for more than 30 years, asked us to encourage all ENA members and friends to participate in the Mothers' Day, May 14, 2000, Million Mom March that will be held in Washington, DC, and at other locations around the Country.

The mission of the March is to recruit from all walks of life mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers, foster mothers, future mothers, and all others willing to be "honorary mothers" in this crusade. This March is not restricted to "Mothers only." All concerned citizens are invited to participate.

The goal of the March is to put Congress on notice that common sense gun policy -- specifically licensing and registration -- is the will of the people.

Congresswoman McCarthy asks "her nurses" to be out there in full force and encourages each of you to wear your "uniform" to show the support of the "frontline care givers." Let's not disappoint her!
