KEMTIA supports proposed EMT regulations By
JOHN HULTGREN FRANKFORT The Kentucky EMT Instructors Association says that the proposed EMT regulation revisions are the best everyone is going to get, and that it's time to get some regulations for EMS to operate under. The latest revision to the Kentucky EMT and ambulance regulations are scheduled for a public hearing on April 28, 2000 at 9 a.m. in the Cabinet for Health Services Auditorium, Health Services Building, First Floor, 275 East Main Street, Frankfort. "Tim May and myself have been tracking the regs for the last year," said Mark Bailey, president of the Kentucky EMT Instructors Association. "The Kentucky Firefighters Association, state advisory council, Northern Kentucky Firefighters Association, Kentucky Ambulance Providers Association, Kentucky Emergency Medical Services Association, and Central Kentucky EMS Alliance have also been tracking the process," Bailey said. "We have, for the most part since December's public hearing, adjusted, adapted or changed the regs to meet most everyone's needs," Bailey said. "We certainly are not going to please everyone, but the bottom line is we need current regs in the state to operate on. We can come back and adjust where we need to as time goes on." "Three-to-five years for EMT and paramedic regs is ridiculous," Bailey said, referring to the length of time that the Kentucky EMS Branch has been trying to revise the Kentucky EMS regulations. "Let's finally get regs established for the state and finish this long overdue process. We can refine as we go forward." If the proposed regulations make it through the public hearing successfully, they will be published in the Administrative Record on May 1 in preparation for legislative approval on June 1. The regulations could be in effect by July 16.
