SB 349 may exclude EMS from hazardous duty retirement

FRANKFORT — Kentucky Senate Bill 349, filed Tuesday, may limit state hazardous duty retirement to police, firefighters, and corrections officer, effectively excluding emergency medical technicians from that benefit.

The bill would create a new statute -- KRS Chapter 61A -- that defines "hazardous duty position" as "a position that meets the requirements of Section 5 of this Act."

Section 5 states: "For an employee hired on or after August 1, 2001: (1) 'Hazardous position' means: (a) Any position whose principal duties involve active law enforcement in a police department and active fire suppression or prevention in a fire department; or (b) State correctional officers with routine face-to-face contact with state prisoners."
